On A Plane and Off We Go

Note: we have now arrived in Cartagena. This post was written just before we left (obviously) and I was banking on having free internet while waiting around at the airport. Alas, free Internet could not be found. Instead on arriving at LAX we found out that we made a travel mistake only a novice would make.

As I’m writing this post, it’s quite next to impossible to put down in words how we’re feeling: a version of nervous and excitement that we had not experienced before which manifests itself in weird contradictory feelings such as itching to leave and wanting to stay, feeling hungry and full to the stomach, having this thirst for alcohol yet feeling slightly hungover… all at the same time.

In an about an hour we’re going to be on a plane that will take us to Colombia, and our around the world trip has officially started.

But in a way, the journey actually started a long time ago

About 4 years ago, arbitrarily we decided that 2011 is going to be the year we were going to quit our job to travel. That arbitrary decision has affected every single major decisions we made from then on: from continuously downgrading to smaller and cheaper apartment in order to save money, to the decision to foster as opposed to having pets.

Not until towards the end of 2010 did we realize that 2011 was just around the corner and we needed to start planning if we really were going to make it happen.

And somehow (to make a long story short), we actually made it happen.

In case you missed it, here were some the highlights from the first phase of our journey:

The tedious, saving-money part of the journey:
How to Save For A RTW Trip
How much does it cost to travel around the world?

Making all sorts of nerve-wrecking decisions:
We bought our tickets – The day when it got just a little more real.

Then of course we had to quit our jobs,
Giving notice at work – and the day we had the pleasure of ‘meeting’ you all for the first time.
Our last day at work – not quite what expected.

and we finally became what what are now:
We’re Now Carless, Jobless, and Homeless

But now, it’s time for the fun part!

The part that starts… well. Now.
Where we’re going in South America (do you have any suggestions for our itinerary?)

*A little note for you, yes you.

This is for friends and families back home, relatives, and friends we’ve met online…

If you’ve been following our journey from the very beginning,
Thank you for your support and encouragement. Really. We mean it. I’m getting teary eyed just thinking about it. Leaving would be that much harder without the knowledge that we’ll have your support.

If you’ve just recently started following our journey,
Hope you stick around. The fun part is just about to begin 🙂

Talk to you soon.
