Leaving Our Jobs and Coming Out Party

Hello World, Meet Us!

The 5 people who read our blog regularly might have noticed that we don’t have our faces pictured anywhere on this blog. Up until now.

Hello World, meet Jack and Jill and shaved ice

It’s not that we’re camera shy, or anything.

We luuuurve having pictures taken of ourselves. As a matter of fact, you might get sick of seeing our pictures all over this blog from now on.

The reason we don’t have any pictures of us yet is because we want to stay relatively anonymous until we give notices at our jobs.

Which we did. Last Friday.

As of 18th of March we will be (gainfully) unemployed.

It’s a scary feeling and yet exhilarating at the same time.

How did our bosses and coworkers take the news?
Jack’s bosses LOVED him and I think they were devastated that he’s leaving. Mine was super excited for our plan (and offered to help us find a buyer for our car).

Unfortunately, none of our them offered to shower us with money and stock options to bribe us to stay 🙂

Doubt they’d be able to afford what it would take, anyway.

So, it’s actually happening

We’re heading to Colombia in April 18th and making our way down and around South America. What comes after April 18th is unknown and it’s bloody exciting!

Are you going to be in South America this year? If so, give us a shout. Would love to meet up.

  1. Wow – so exciting! (I realize that I am reading this nearly one year after you have quit your jobs – only found you now!!! Looking forward to reading through your posts and fuelling my travel bucketlist!!! (It is already quite robust – but I am always excited to find new and exciting adventures!)

  2. karo karoo!!! you're with your adventure! wish I could join….but really? have u guys been saving up? or just go with the flow when winds take you :)….HOW FUNNN!!!!!!!!!!

Take care! if you visited Indo….let me know!

  3. Hey! Colombia! Yay 🙂 I'm here now. You're gonna love it. Congrats on taking the plunge and giving up the jobs to travel. Classic photo too. Love the expressions! Safe travels!!

  4. Hmm..! After having followed you people as masked individuals, I finally can see the faces behind this whole presentation of nice text and pictures. Nice, because its always easy to picture you speaking as we read across your words once we know how you really do look like.

  5. Congratulations on coming out!

When I was about to head off sailing for two years, the guy I was going with, Ivan, worked in a Silicon Valley Telco company. Just a couple of weeks before we were due to quit our jobs and move onto the boat, the Telco company announced that they were downsizing, and they asked if anyone wanted to volunteer to quit in exchange for a $30,000 severance package. Ivan's hand shot up faster than you can say 'luckymofo'.

  6. Looks like I dropped by just in time for the send off 🙂 I'm new to your blog and will be sure to follow your adventures. By the way, was the photo taken at Jo Jo's shaved ice in Kauai?

  7. So Funny! I started a blog and plan to remain anonymous as well, because I too plan to quit my job and travel RTW, but not for another year. Congrats to you both. I'll be in South America late this year, hiking with friends. I'll be sure to keep up with you both as you start your journey!

  8. Congratulations Jack and Jill!!! You guys DID it!! You did something so many people talk about doing their entire lives! BIG HIGH FIVES AND HUGS RIGHT NOW!!!!
I can't wait to see more where this adventure takes you two 🙂

  9. Congrats!!! Every time I've quit a job to go travel it's been an amazing feeling. Can't wait to read and follow your travels. We'll be in Argentina until May 18. We'd love to meet up if you make it down here.

    1. Hey, thanks for coming by. There's a slight possibility we'll be in Argentina around May — although most likely it won't be until much later. Where are you heading off to next?

    2. Sadly, we'll be heading back to the US May 18. We're looking forward to seeing family and friends, but bummed to stop traveling for a little bit.

  10. CONGRATULATIONS! I'm doing the VERY same thing as you two. My blog was on password protected lockdown until I gave notice on March 4! I'll be in Chile from April 18 and on… Looking forward to reading about all your adventures 🙂

  11. I guess you could hardly have had better reactions from your bosses. Maybe they'll hire you back when you return 🙂 I'll be following along with you when you go!

  12. Whoooo! Congrats! It's lovely to finally see your faces. 🙂

(And, judging from the huge response on this post, you have much more than 5 people following your blog!)

  13. Hi Jack & Jill!

I'm very excited for you both and I appreciate your blog for introducing us to other couples that have chosen a nomadic lifestyle!

    April 18th, HERE YOU COME!

  14. CONGRATULATIONS! And yes, I was shouting! Yes, Talon form 1dad1kid is right, my son and I are currently in Colombia. We've been here 2 months, will stay for another. We'll be in Ecuador in April. Stay in touch, and congrats once again!!

  15. Who knew you two were so dammed good-looking! Congrats guys – we are admittedly green with envy that we are, right or wrong, still feeling unable to reveal our plans, to the point where we haven't even launched our blog (as you know)….all in due time I suppose…

    Keep up the awesome blogging!

    1. You're being too nice to Jack, lol!!! 🙂
Your time will come and it's going to be worth the wait… coz it's going to be great!! Thanks for being following us along on our journey from way back when.

  16. Yay!!! All this time I've been wanting to see your smiling faces and here you are!!! Does this mean no more cat gravatars? 😛

Now…real first names? Wishful thinking? 😀

  17. Hello you two, nice to meet you properly finally! 😉 This is SO exciting and I'm sure that resigning from your jobs must make it so much more real now, no? 6 weeks to go!!

    1. Yes. 1000x feels more real. Feeling different emotion every day, but mostly a combination of excitement and gawd-what-r-we-doing at the same time. Hah 🙂 Thanks for coming by!

  18. Oh, I'm so jealous.
I'm sitting at my desk, my eyes are aching from lack of sleep because the baby's sick, my shoulders are aching from the flu, my heart is aching because I want to be home with the baby. I can't wait to own my time again.
Like your other fans, I am looking forward to following your adventures.

  19. It's so nice to finally "meet" you guys!! I love reading your blog and I can't wait to hear about all of the adventures you will be having! We have a friend who lives in Colombia (Cali) and she absolutely loves it. Unfortunately, we won't be in South America this year, but we teach and live in Puerto Rico so if you are ever in that neighborhood, let us know! =)

    1. Hi Lindsay! Thank you! And we can't wait to share our adventures on this blog too. Thanks for coming by and commenting.

  20. Oh my god, you guys are super cute. 🙂 This is such an exhilarating time, one that is easy to forget when you have a bad travel day (they do exist). Saviour each moment of new beginnings! I'll be heading to Latin America in the fall, too! Love to meet up if we can. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Jeannie… yes definitely we should try to meet up. We're heading south to end our SA trip in Argentina. Keep in touch!

  21. Yay! Up until now I've pictured you two as small cartoons rolling down a hill, so it's nice to have a more accurate image. 😛

Congrats on giving your notice — your trip is almost here! Woooot!

    1. Hah! On our last skiing trip your cartoon image would've been spot on! Thanks for following us all this time during our pre-adventure phase. Cheers!

  22. Congratulations on the BIIIIIIIG step! (and your mugs are very cute!) My own ETA is still 7 months off, but I can imagine how mixed your feelings must be at this point (somewhere between "GULPPP! and "WooHOO!", am I right?) 😉 I'm headed in the opposite direction (Vietnam) but I'll be watching you and eager to read of all your (no doubt many) adventures.

    1. You're definitely right. Everyday it's a different emotion. Thanks for following us along and cheers for future adventures 🙂

  23. Congrats! I always wondered why there were no photos of you and Jack up. Nice to put faces to the names =). It was so hard for me to keep my excitement in at work. My manager was pretty crushed to find out that I was leaving, but was very supportive at the same time. Glad to hear your coworkers are excited for you two =D.

  24. The first thing I noticed when reading your blog was the lack of personal photos. I'm just happy I can put names to faces now. Congrats with the "coming out" of your travels!

  25. It's very exciting, but hard not to tell people at work. I'll be heading to SE Asia. Thinking I'll start in Manila and work my way by land up to Thailand and then up the coast in Vietnam.

  26. Cool, nice to see you guys! I would've been faced with a similar situation before I took my road trip, but I got laid off a few months early so I didn't have to hide from my employer… so I guess there are positives and negatives to everything.

  27. OMG! I always wondered why you never posted pictures of yourself. It all totally makes sense now!

Congrats on leaving your jobs! I can't imagine how much excitement you must be feeling. April is super super close. I'm 99 percent sure Johnny and I are headed to South America, so we'll definitely have to meet up if you're still there around August 🙂

  28. Yay! We were in shadow when we first started blogging as well! Congrats on the big step and keep in touch…we arrive Santiago this week and are in SA til July =)

  29. So cool to see your faces! I'm happy to hear that you've given notice and are now in the next phase of your pre-adventure (this part is somewhat of an adventure, too, isn't it?). Must be very exciting now… 🙂

I look forward to following along….I'm sure it's going to be great!

  30. Nice to finally meet you two!!

I'm so excited that you guys have gotten things settled and very glad to hear that your jobs took it well! 🙂 I didn't realize you were leaving so soon, yay!!!

    1. Hi Annie, we remember when we used to say 'Next year we're going to… ' and now it's like 'In less than 2 months.." Time goes by quick!

  31. Man I wish I could come out of the closet, very envious. Ashley is lucky enough to have a job contract, so she was able to resign way back in November. Me, I'll have to wait until the beginning of June. I did apply for a leave of absence, but the lack of response I've received has not been encouraging.

It's so hard not talking to people at work about the trip. For a while I worried that I'd get in trouble for putting my name and mug shot up on our blog, Now with the trip only 4 months off, I'm much less nervous about it.

Again, congratulations, it must be such a relief.

    1. Definitely a relief. Keeping work and personal life separate is hard enough as it. Not being able to talk about the most exciting thing you're about to undertake to people that you spend 8 hours a day, 5 days a week with was definitely challenging.

    1. Yes, it was. Our bosses both admitted that there was very little for them to say… I mean, if we had left because we had a different position, it would be a slightly different matter.

  32. Hello, Jill's tongue! Nice to meet you!

Haha, I can't remember when it was…a couple of weeks ago, when I did notice that I had not seen your purdy faces yet (maybe it was on someone's guest post?) Very clever!

Congrats again on the big STEP! The countdown begins… =)

  33. Its a great feeling finally getting your leaving work date confirmed, isn't it? My last day is April 15th so a little bit longer for me to wait 😉

Bet you can't wait to get going now, as you say its all bloody exciting.

  34. Wow! As much as I would love to do a round the world trip like what you guys are planning, perhaps my personality as an INTJ ultimately prevents me from doing so, not to mention the fact that I'm also trying to get a dissertation finished. But I still can vicariously do that by reading about your travels. Looking forward to reading more about your adventures!

By the way, Colombia is an awesome choice of a destination. I was there for an unfortunate 8 hours (due to a bad airline connection) and I spent it wisely by loitering around Plaza Bolivar in Bogota. I'd love to see more of that city one day!

  35. Hi,
I remember handing in my notice at work the first time I came to South America.
It was an amazing sensation of 'WTF have I just done' with a bit of 'There's no looking back now' and of course excitement mixed with nerves of the unknown.
Let us know when you are in Santiago (Chile).
    Rob W.

  36. Hi Jack and Jill, Congrats!! How exciting! I have one more month until I give my notice. Until then I will be living vicariously through you 🙂

  37. Congrats on the announcement! That really makes it real – when you've put it out there into the world, to your employers, and you're on that last countdown to the end, when you get to give final hugs and kisses, strap on the backpack that will be your best friend for the next many, many months! 🙂 Looking forward to your adventure!

  38. Congrats guys! Looking forward to reading where your journey takes you. I'll be in South America at some point this fall and would love to meet up. In the interim, do you know other travellers in Colombia? I'm happy to put you in touch with a few if you don't. Good luck with the packing and last minute planning!

  39. How exciting! And so great to finally see a picture of you both! 🙂

Can't wait to read about all your upcoming travels, not long to go now! 🙂
