Mike and Luci from 1000 Fights — Meet A Traveling Couple

09 February 2011 | 6 Filed under: Travelling As A Couple

This week couple is Mike and Luci from 1000 Fights, the blog the chronicles the fights they’ve had while traveling. Learn more about them from the following interview.

So, tell me a little bit about yourself and your blog:

The title of our blog (1000 fights) kinda sums us up. We love to fly. We also love to travel. So naturally we decided to combine the two and share the outcome with the world.

We are two “type A” personalities and make reality TV look tame. We met in the 2nd grade, we started fighting in 6th grade and haven’t stopped.

What would you say your traveling ‘style’ is?

We have a number of good friends that quit their “normal” jobs, pack a rucksack, and set out to travel the world. That is just not us. We both travel a good deal in the US for our jobs, so we have been able to see some great places. We take one or two “big” trips a year as a couple. We do extensive planning. We learn the language; we learn the culture and history of the location.

Did you know that this whole travel thing was going to be part of the relationship?

On our honeymoon we came up with a plan. For every year that we are married, we would add another $100 a year for airfare to go on another trip. Needless to say, our first few years our trips were close by. Gradually we expanded. Our annual trip is just the two of us. It is a great chance to reconnect. We highly recommend traveling as a couple!

How you divvy up responsibilities on the road?

Mike is responsible for two things: language and driving. Mike lives to learn new languages. He speaks three fluently (Mandarin, Chinese, Taiwanese, and a little English) and can converse in basic terms in another three to four. His driving prowess is not quite up to Top Gear status.

Luci is the organizer, director and taskmaster.

Biggest fight during your trip and how you resolved it!

So many to choose from! Our very best was our visit to the Louvre in Paris. The complete story is retold on our site, http://1000fights.com/greatest-fights/. Enjoy!

Tips on successful travel as a couple?

Luci: I have two pieces of advice: First, read everything you can about where you are visiting. Don’t just read travel books. Read history books. Read novels set in the country. Get to know as much as you can before you go. Second, don’t be afraid to talk to people. People are friendly when you are friendly. You’ll learn more by talking to others than your spouse!

Mike- My advice is simple: Go. If you lack the financial ability to go international, explore your city, your state or your own country. Discovery is so refreshing.

It’s ok to fight. It‘s really ok.
Fighting is a clash of ideas and opinions; the fact that you both feel strongly is to be celebrated. I don’t know how many times one of us has said, “I want to go see this.” The immediate response for the other is “why?” A discussion of why a given topic is important ensues. You learn so much from this exercise. You learn about your spouse likes and dislikes. You learn about their passions.

Traveling is a microcosm for life. You must budget, agree on directions (thank goodness for GPS!) set priorities and work together. Recognize and enjoy those aspects as you travel. The best part of fighting is it gives you an excuse to make up (we won’t offer any advice on that topic; we will leave it to you!)

3 things we don’t know about you

Mike:
- I am a classical pianist
- I enjoy competitive sabre fencing
- I grew up on a Hereford cattle ranch.

Luci
- I didn’t fly on a plane until I was 17
- I am huge Gone with the Wind fan
- I collect women’s suffrage memorabilia..

Who would you want to play the both of you on the big screen?

Mike: Gordon Ramsey & Jennie Garth (she is so dang hot!, but not as hot as Luci)
Luci: Josh Duhamel and Juliette Binoche

Thanks for participating guys. Fight on!

I agree with you on the part where it is OK to fight, because I’m surprised at how many things I’ve learnt through fighting alone! :) Nice interview and nice blog guys! Keep up the good work :)

That’s such a sweet plan, to add another 100$ every year!

I really like your $100/year airfare deal with each other. :) And your take on conflict in relationships is refreshing — it’s not necessarily a bad thing; just makes you (hopefully) communicate more, and every fight can be worked through!

Yowza! That Louvre fight was CLASSIC. Mike, seriously? The creme brule?

Love the celebrity choices, although I would have expected a famous fighting couple – the Romano’s, the Flintstones! Haha!

    Cheers guys! Great interview.
