How I Will Help You Save The World (and 500 homeless pets)

31 January 2011 | 10 Filed under: Volunteer

Some of you might have noticed the long banner with a cute rat on the side of our homepage. And you might wonder “What is that all about?”

Last Friday I came across two things that came to my attention:
1. This post of Powered by Tofu that talks about a Year of Giving (every week she’ll donate $11 to different charity).
2. Our favorite local rescue group that’s handling a big animal hoarding case is running low on funds.
Find out why this is close to our hearts.

Do you watch A&E hoarders? If so, you might’ve seen the rat hoader case.
If not, here’s a preview of the show from EW: video

Anyway, I left a comment on Power by Tofu saying “What a way to make us all feel like selfish bastards.

I was kidding… but really.

It made me squirm with discomfort thinking that the amount of travel money we have saved up on for our RTW trip could be used for much more noble purposes.

Superhero

Like saving the world

We talk about why we’re going on a RTW trip but in reality, going on an extended trip has the word ‘selfish’ written all over it. We go because we want to enrich ourselves with experiences. We go because it’s what WE have always wanted to do it. We go because WE want to see the world.

We, we, we…

How 0.83% can mean a lot

The average monthly cost of a RTW trip is $2000/month. That’s roughly $24000 a year. What if, what if… we donate $200 to our favorite charity. It might seem like a lot until you realise that it’s less than 1% of an average RTW budget.

It’s truly a drop in the bucket, but for an animal rescue that means a lot.

You want me to give $200?! Heck, I don’t even have $5 to spare

That’s cool. Depending on where you are, even $1 can go a long way. If after reading the post from Powered by Tofu you feel compelled to do something similar, here is your chance to double your impact in saving the world.

Donate to your favorite charity and we will match it 100%

Half of it would go to your chosen charity, and the other half would go to North Star Rescue.

E.g.: You donate $20 to Kiva.org
We will: donate $10 to Kiva under your name (if applicable), and $10 to North Star Rescue.

This is what you need to do:
Step 1: Locate the ‘donate’ button on your favorite charity site
Step 2: Email us the receipt at contact@jackandjilltravel.com
Step 3: Bask in the warm and fuzzy feeling you get for making the world a better place

Read the fine print

You can of course, choose North Star Rescue as your charity and double your impact.

I really don’t have anything to spare

And that’s fine too. You can still help:
- Donate your time. Foster an animal at your house/apartment. Play with dogs and cats at the shelter. They’re not meant to spend most of their lives in cages, you can be the highlight of their day.
- Have rich friends and relatives? Email this post
- Spread the news by re-tweeting or ‘like’ it
- Leave a comment below to show your support and encouragement

What’s in it for us?

We love animals, but especially pet rats. We’ve worked with Lauren, the co-founder of North Star Rescue and I can vouch that she’s a good person. Not many rescues are willing to accept 1000 unwanted animals at one time. It’s a no-BS charity and I can assure you your donation will go towards good use.

In all honesty, giving makes us feel good. As a matter of fact, studies have shown that giving makes people feel good.

Yes, in the end it is about we, we, we…
Who says that being selfish is always a bad thing?

huh. well looky there. I’d never seen it broken down like that but 1% isn’t so much, now is it? Guess I need to get out there and do some more donating.

This is a really great thing you guys are doing. I always say if I had a lot of money, I would give it to dog charities. I think you make a great point that travel can sometimes be selfish. It is important to find ways to give back, even while you are traveling.

You guys are awesome. I’ve also struggled with the same guilt about saving up so much money to travel when that money could be used to do some good in the world. I don’t know how to come to terms with it yet, except we will be spending some time volunteering and trying to help in the places we visit.

Thank you SO MUCH for reaching out to the worlds most underrated little companions, rats. I’ve adopted all but one of my ratty companions from North Star Rescue (Harriet came from SFACC) and I cant’s sing enough praise for them. If anyone is looking to adopt a rodent or rabbit in the SF Bay area, please consider the 100% volunteer supported North Star Rescue!

This is such a great idea! Sometimes it’s easy to forget or just fail to prioritize charitable giving (especially if you’re trying to save for something big). So thanks for the reminder, and kudos to you for making matching donations! :)

Our charity of choice is Doctors Without Borders – they do great humanitarian work all over the world. They’re working with women in the Congo (due to the mass numbers of violent gang rape – http://www.salon.com/life/broadsheet/2010/08/24/congo_rape) and relief efforts in Haiti, among other things.

It’s heartbreaking to know that mass-rape is still a reality in this modern era :( ‘Heartbreaking’ is an understatement to what I actually feel about the subject, really.

Doctors Without Borders is a wonderful charity. I’m proud to be supporting them. There are so many wonderful charities doing wonderful things around the world. I wish I could clone myself 100 times so I could dedicate each to a cause

    Hi Jack, Hi Jill

Great content, I really love the idea of saving the world and the filontraphy acts, as soon as I will get some money on my Paypal, I will try helping the cause. Thank you very much for sharing this article and the ‘Donate’ button, I’m trying…

    Best regards,
